The sheer wonder of the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God is generally ignored by most people at any time. This is both sad and tragic. The message is increasingly drowned out by the commercialised secular celebration—the Christless ‘Christmas’. The vast majority of people prefer ‘the world’ to ‘the Word’. Even within ‘Christendom’, who can deny that ‘sentimentality’ seems to oust ‘spirituality’, and ‘tradition’ is preferred to ’truth’?
In this brief sequence of studies, the author invites us to return to the authentic message of the Bible. We are reminded that the babe of Bethlehem was born to die. He went from the cradle to the cross, for the salvation of mankind. This was the message of His manhood (see John 3: 16), as highlighted by the cover art of Kate Grant. Her creative ‘Passover’ feature (see Exodus 12: 7) at the heart of her painting reminds us that Jesus came as ‘the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world’ (John 1: 29).
Rather than miss the ‘provision’ in the midst of the ‘perversion’, be encouraged by the experience of those who first met Jesus. Let us listen afresh to the Word of the living and loving LORD GOD ALMIGHTY, GOD-IN-CHRIST, trusting Him as they did.
